Creating a lean culture throught visualization, standardization and Kaizen

The practice of lean management is well-known within the manufacturing industry as a universal tool for eliminating waste and achieving continuous improvement. However, with an increasingly global market and fierce competition, more and more organizations outside of manufacturing are beginning to turn to lean management to control costs and improve product quality in the corporate workspace.

While lean management practices are beneficial and should be implemented across industries, many organizations are recognizing the gap on how to apply these processes, traditionally used in manufacturing and warehouses, within their corporate office environment.

A workplace culture of continuous improvement adds value across an organization, and office employees and teams are just as capable of achieving similar, positive results seen on the manufacturing side.

The Raymond Corporation has developed best practices through the Raymond Lean Management (RLM) program for engaging and empowering corporate employees to implement lean management concepts in their day-to-day work activities. The foundational RLM tools explained in this session include:

  • Visualization: Key performance indicators (KPIs) are utilized to visualize the actual condition from the target and enable the team to determine their course of action
  • Standardization: Provides complete, detailed standardization of all work elements, not just for value-added processes but for all support functions
  • Kaizen: Small incremental improvements that improve upon an existing standard

Participants will learn how to apply lean management tools and processes to eliminate waste in a corporate workspace and will learn that lean management can be applied to areas outside manufacturing operations.

Justin Sturek is a continuous improvement manager at The Raymond Corporation at their corporate office. Sturek joined Raymond in 2013 and has 12 years’ experience in continuous improvement initiatives. Before joining Raymond, he worked as supervisor for Amphenol Aerospace, an electronic connector manufacturer located in Sidney, New York and previously worked at Endicott Interconnect a leading printed circuit board manufacturer as a lean leader and industrial engineer for six years. Sturek holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Binghamton University and, in 2012, he received his executive master’s degree in business administration from the Binghamton University School of Management. Justin also earned his Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification in 2017. He was most recently recognized as one of the 2018 Engineering Leaders Under 40 by Plant Engineering.

Frank Stuart is a continuous improvement manager at The Raymond Corporation's Service Centers in North America. Stuart joined Raymond in 2011 as a department manager in the Assembly department and had 20 years prior experience in continuous improvement initiatives. Before joining Raymond, he worked as plant manager, warehouse manager and global service technician at various corporations in upstate New York. Stuart holds a bachelor’s in Operations Management and an associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from SUNY University. He has also studied Lean Six Sigma at SUNY Broome.
